A Study Of C-E Interpreting Strategies Of People’s Livelihood Expressions In Li Keqiang’s Speeches At Press Conferences(2013-2018)from The Perspective Of The Skopos Theory

With the reform and opening-up and the rapid development of China’s economy and its increasing international status,people’s livelihood issues in China have begun to attract worldwide attention.A large number of people’s livelihood neologisms with Chinese characteristics related to people’s livelihood have frequently appeared in China’s official mainstream media,covering a wide range of political,economic,cultural and other social areas.The interpretation of people’s livelihood expressions can convey China’s new information to the world in time,so this thesis has practical significance.As the core of German functional translation theory,Vermeer’s Skopos Theory focuses on the choice of different purposes in the process of translation and holds that the strategies of translation are determined by the purpose of translation.From the perspective of the Skopos Theory,the purpose of English interpretation of people’s livelihood expressions is to make the target language in line with the language habits of the recipients so that the meaning conveyed by the source language can be better understood and retain the Chinese characteristics of the target language,so as to better disseminate Chinese culture to the world.This thesis reviews the development and researches of the Skopos Theory at home and abroad and the related studies of people’s livelihood expressions’ English interpretation.It takes many examples in Premier Li’s speeches at press conferences from 2013-2018 to illustrate the way that the three rules of the Skopos Theory to be applied in interpreting people’s livelihood expressions.Under the guidance of the three rules of the Skopos Theory,this thesis summarizes several major interpreting strategies and techniques adopted by the interpreter from the perspectives of words and sentences,including literal translation,adaptation,additional translation,free translation,omission,combination,word order adjustment and so on,finding the feasibility and possibility of the application of the Skopos Theory to analyze the English interpretation of people’s livelihood expressions in press conferences.Hopefully,this thesis can provide a reference for further study of interpreting strategies of people’s livelihood expressions.
