The translation of food product information (FPI) is an important medium for the foreigners to know about China’s food culture. With an increasing number of Chinese products competing in the overseas market, more and more food manufacturers put both English and Chinese versions of food products on the packages, which directly give birth to the C-E translation of FPI. In recent years, the studies on the topic have drawn much more attention from scholars and experts. However, most researches have been conducted from the perspective of linguistics or translation theory, few people focus on adaptive studies of the FPI translation from the pragmatic perspective.The author attempts to focus on the C-E translation of FPI from the perspective of Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory, which sheds strikingly new light on the translation process of FPI. This thesis is divided into four parts. In chapter one, after the general overview of FPI and the comparison between English and Chinese FPI, the author makes an overall review of the previous studies on FPI translation. Chapter two gives a brief introduction to Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory and analyzes the applicability of Adaptation Theory in C-E translation of FPI. Chapter three discusses the current problems arising in C-E translation of FPI and provides suggested versions based on the above theoretical framework. Chapter four concludes several solutions to improve C-E translation of FPI under the framework of Adaptation Theory.Through the above analysis, the thesis comes to the conclusion that Adaptation Theory as the guiding theory of FPI translation is rationale and feasible. Moreover, this tentative study will be not only worthy and essential to the development of Chinese food products and the promotion of Chinese culture but also conducive to food product information translators and companies.
