China’s rapid development of economy and the trend of internationalization result in an increasing demand for the C-E translation of food product information. At the moment, as translating food product information from Chinese to English plays a vital role in connecting China with other countries in the world, the quality of C-E translation of food product information exerts a great influence on the international communication. From the prospective of “functionally appropriate” translation, a piece of successful C-E translated food product information is no more restricted to a correct rendering of the source text, but rather a target text effectively realizing the communicative purposes and text functions of the source text. Considering the above factors, this thesis conducts a qualitative research on the C-E translation of food product information from the perspective of skopos theory, aiming at finding out appropriate translation principles and approaches to address the current translation problem in the C-E food product information and improve the translation quality of food product information.Under the guidance of Skopos theory, this thesis found that the current problem in the C-E translation of food product information is that many translators cannot effectively realize the informative and vocative functions of source languages in the target text, due to many translation mistakes and that is because these translators attach little importance to the differences on linguistic and cultural level between Chinese and English. The thesis classifies these translation mistakes into two major groups: mistakes on linguistic and cultural level. And a deep exploration into the causes of these mistakes is made from linguistic and cultural aspects. In terms of three rules of skopos theory, that is, skopos rule, coherence rule and fiderlity rule, two translation approaches are proposed in this thesis: factual approach and emotional approach. In the meantime, some recommendations for translating food product information are presented.Theoretically, this thesis has proved that skopos theory is of feasibility to play a guidance role in the C-E translation of food product information; practically, this thesis has supplied more flexible translation approaches to solve the current problem in the C-E translation of food product information.
