On Stylistic Features Of Sino-US Diplomatic Translation Texts In Thirty Five Years

Diplomacy, symbolizing the highest level of relationship among countries, represents the extension to the outside world by means of countries’national policies. Because of the key role diplomacy plays in national interests, role of language which is a crucial tool for diplomatic work cannot be neglected. What’s more, in the diplomatic activities, it is unrealistic for state leaders or diplomats who come from different countries and speak different languages to communicate normally; therefore, translation work is indispensible in diplomatic activities. Different from other translation activities, translators working in the diplomatic field shoulder greater responsibilities as state leaders speak after they have thought about the propriety of sentences many times. Harboring its unique features, diplomatic language is constrained by diplomatic activities but manifests features of diplomatic language as well.As the largest developing country in the world, China is blessed with abundant labor resources and huge domestic markets. The U.S. is an advanced country carrying the strongest economic and scientific capacity. With China and the US having become each other’s largest trading partners, Sino-US relations have a direct bearing on the world economic outlook. The thesis attempts to develop by initiating from the features of Sino-US diplomatic languages, and analyzes the stylistic features of diplomatic translation texts with language text-types theory by Newmark. It concludes that principles of diplomatic translation are accuracy, flexibility and formalization.This thesis has five chapters. The first chapter introduces the research background, purposes, significance and organization. The second chapter explains diplomatic languages including oral communication and written documents in a detailed manner, and finds out linguistic features of diplomatic written documents based on their categories’classification. The third chapter systematically describes and classifies diplomatic languages based on language text-types theory by Newmark, and further analyzes the translation methods. The fourth chapter expounds on the principles of diplomatic translation, including accuracy, flexibility and formalization, as well as the text-types analysis of diplomatic translation. The fifth chapter presents findings of this thesis, offering suggestions on the vocational and professional requirements of translators working for diplomatic activities.
