Research On Diplomatic Documents In The Early Period Of The Early Tang Dynasty

Sui and Tang dynasties are the most significant diplomatic development period of the Chinese ancient feudal history. The internationality of this period is more than Qin and Han dynasties in the depth and space. The pioneering of emperor in early tang dynasty leads to the beginning and improving of tang diplomatic system, which makes him to title himself "king of the world" and stay stably on the position of domination. The frequent foreign affairs, the wide range countries and the open diplomatic policy bring about a situation of thousands countries coming and meeting the emperor of tang. There are many recipient of diplomatic documents, which are mainly Korean Peninsula, Tibet on northwest and Turkic. The affairs involved are miscellaneous which are mainly about conquest and war. The type of the writings focuses on Zhao.Tang's extreme status in international community is truly worthy of the name. The emperors in early tang dynasty were extremely cautious on diplomatic affairs and finally made extraordinary achievements. This thesis select the period from Wude of Tang Gaozu to Hongdao of Tang Gaozong and study on official historic materials, document collections and academic writings, especially the specific diplomatic documents form tang to the other power. This thesis's objective is to probe into the validity and practicability of diplomatic documents to maintain political stability and access the highest position under the special background. Early tang's diplomatic thoughts guided the documents, which could be summarized to three thoughts. The first is exercising a combination of inflexibility and yielding, second is compelling submission by kindness, and the third is thinking deeply and planning carefully. In addition, early Tang's diplomatic thesis has great realistic significance on Chinese independent foreign policy of peace nowadays.The preface gives a brief introduction of the meaning of this thesis, research status at home and abroad on the topic, contents and methods, innovation and insufficient. What's more, "the early tang" and "diplomatic documents" are defined here. The main body expand discussion from four aspects:the overview of diplomatic documents in early tang, the diplomatic documents between tang and the regime in Korean peninsula, the diplomatic documents between tang and the regime in northwest, and the value reflection of these documents. The first part focus on the overall state which is separated into three sections:the historic position of early tang, the reflection of the international order leaded by tang, the development of diplomatic documents. The diplomatic activities, evaluations of academic, the type, the writers and the passers are all mentioned. The second and third parts are concrete analysis about documents, which mainly focus on regimes like Gaoli, Baiji,. Xinluo, Gaochang, Xueyantuo, Tuyuhun, Tujue. At the end, there are three sections of the fourth part, which discuss the diplomatic concepts, attitudes and thoughts.
