Translation is a kind of activity refers to information communication and exchange of cross-culture, which relates to communications between people. How to manage relationships between people, and to coordinate the conflicts between alien culture and local culture directly matter the success of translating activity, so we need ethics to help us to investigate and study those problems. Studies on translation ethics were started relatively late in China as well as in the western world, but an increasing group of scholars are paying attention to it.The western translation ethics was started in1980s by Antonine Berman who is a famous literature translator, philosopher and translation ethics scholar in French. He is the first person that pointed out the concept of "translation ethics", and emphasize that "translation ethics" is an essential part of constructing translatology. Afterwords, there were Anthony Pym, Andrew Chesterman and other scholars studied on it. Chesterman’s five translation ethics models contribute a lot to the study of translation ethics. This thesis studies the translation of English versions of "Journey to the West " from perspective of Chesterman’s communication ethics and representation ethics, combining with "mutual-beneficiary ethics"Chinese classics are loaded with a large number of cultural elements which are showed through culture specific words. The translation of classics plays an important role in cultural output; however, translation of culture specific word is the key to the whole translation work. Therefore, translators and scholars have to be more cautious and careful in translating those culture specific words in order to achieve a better effect, and to establish a friendly relationship:mutual understand, and to learn from each other, between China and other countries."Journey to the west" has been translated into many languages. The most famous and well-known English translation versions are:W.J.F.Jenner’s version, Anthony C.Yu’s version and Arthur Waley’s version. Under the guidance of translation ethics, especially Manchester’s representation, communication ethic models, and the most potential "mutual benefit ethics", this thesis chooses Yu and.lenner’s version as the study text. The author discusses the two English versions from the following aspects:ecologic culture, material culture, religious culture, numerous culture and color culture, with a deep understanding of Chinese culture.Over the whole study on "Journey to The West", it finds that famous scholars like Jenner and Yu Guofan would make mistakes in translating Chinese culture specific words, for they misunderstand these words. Both of them tried to transfer real Chinese culture covered in "Journey to the West" to western readers. They obeyed foreignization strategy and took methods of liter-translation and word-by word translation and so on. Jenner’s version is more concise and direct, while Yu focused on representation. When he translated some Buddhism words, he restored their original Sanskrit sayings. Both versions always meet one ethics models, but fail to satisfy communication ethics models and representation ethic models in the meantime. Therefore, the thesis points out some suggestions under the guidance of translation ethics:ethics of mutual-beneficiary as the main premise, with combining ethics of representation and communication. Suggestions are pointed out from aspects of strategy and methodology. First, to follow the strategy of foreignization, restore the exotic features of Chinese culture for target readers, and bring a entirely unique and charming culture to them. Second, there are8concrete methods followed:thick translation, blending, transliteration, word-for-word translation, elucidatory explanation, making note, illustration and complementation. I hope these suggestions can make some contributions to the study in the future.
