Domestication strategy plays a crucial role in the translation of the text. For a long time, therehas been a contradiction between the source language and the target language and between theoriginal and the target writer. How to deal with the contradiction, respect and preserve the nationalculture has become an urgent problem to be solved. So, the terms of domestication andforeignization emerged as time requires. This report, based on the translation practice, mainlydiscusses the application of domestication strategy in the translation. The translation text excerptsfrom The Civilization of Illiteracy written by Mihai Nadin. The report is divided into five parts,the first part mainly introduces the basic situation of the translation project, including the selectionof the translation text, the preparations before the translation and the translation process. Thesecond part briefly introduces the author Mihai Nadin, as well as the main contents and writingbackgrounds of The Civilization of Illiteracy. The third part introduces the sources and contents ofthe domestication theory, and the current situation of research for the domestication theory athome and abroad. The author mainly introduces the theoretical source of Lawrence Venuti, E. A.Nida’s functional equivalence and Mr Qian Zhongshu’s sublimation theory. The fourth partmainly discusses the application of domestication theory in actual translation projects from threelevels of lexical, syntactical and stylistic. The author chooses two points in the lexical level, whichare the conversion of the words and the selection of the words which is determined by the context.In the syntactical level, the author talks about the translation strategies of the long sentences andpassive voice. And in the stylistic level, the author mainly discusses the application of rhetoricalmethods as well as the Chinese four-character word. The last part is the summary of the translationproject and report.
