Jude the Obscure, one of Thomas Hardy’s masterpieces, enjoys a world wide reputation. In1958, Zhang Guruo’s translation appeared, and soon it enjoyed a great popularity due to his high translation quality and especially his unique translation skills. Zhang’s most important skill is "variation translation". This thesis tries to carry out a systematic analysis of "variation translation" in Zhang’s translation, based on the "variation translation theory" of Huang Zhonglian. This thesis focuses on Zhang’s variation translation by qualitative and quantitative analysis. Based on variation translation theory,252variation translation examples containing either historical information or implied meanings are picked from Jude the Obscure and Zhang’s translation, including20examples for adding,6for cutting,21for editing and40for changing. Based on quantitative analysis, it carries out a systematic qualitative analysis from aspects of words’classification, reasons, purposes, typical samples, advantages as well as disadvantages. The study shows that the success of Zhang’s translation lies in the following factors:firstly, using slangs, proverbs, dialects to translate the original ones and expressing historical culture and regional characteristic successfully; secondly, using annotations effectively; thirdly, speculating target reader’s psychology. Other two findings are:1) variation translation is an effective method in the translation practice;2) its theory has innovative guiding significance for translation practice, especially for literary translation, and for evaluating translated works as well.
