Nowadays, the communications between the countries all over the world becomedeeper and deeper.Compared with the past times, people badly need intercultural communication. Translation plays a veryimportant role in intercultural communication. China’s Report to the18th National Congress addressedby President Hu Jintao makes our people better know the government and the world better know ourcountry. Since the reform and opening-up, People’s Congress System of China has been improved dayby day. In People’s Congress regular meetings, governments at all levels showed the report and make itdraw more and more attention. As a result, political report has become a familiar writing style for allChinese people. The Report to the18th National Congress includes the policies, guidelines and routesabout the development of our country. In order to make our country’s major policies not only known byChinese people, but also by the world, the translation of the report becomes an inevitable trend.However, because of the strong political nature of the report, so that the report has a very highdemand for the fidelity of the translation and any errors in translating cannot be allowed. Therefore, thetranslator must have the good foreign language literacy as well as the good political tutelage. Moreover,because there are many new ideas and concepts with Chinese characteristics appearing in the report, it isvery hard to find the directly corresponded words from the dictionary, which will easily result in the“Chinglish” phenomenon in the process of translation. Meanwhile, because the political seriousness willalways make the version mechanical and dull, the readers of the target language cannot easilyunderstand the version.This thesis is instructed under the guidance of both Chinese and western translation theories,especially the Equivalence Translation Theory of Eugene A. Nida. The author makes a detailed researchand analysis of the report at18th Party Congress from three aspects: lexical, syntactic, and discourse.Through the analysis, the author mainly discusses the following three research questions:1.What is thestylistic feature of the report?2. How to avoid the “Chinglish” phenomenon in translating the report?3.What are the principles and skills in the translation of it?In this thesis, the analyses of the examples are offered to state the translation principles and skills,and all these examples are selected from the report combining with specific translation strategies. Inorder to make the report recreate the political, economic and social development of our country’smodern society in the new culture environment and make the readers of the target language gain fulland accurate understanding the present state of our country, the translators should adopt differentstrategies according to the different cases. Through the research with three aspects, this thesis concludesthat the translation principles for political report are the following four points: accuracy, integrity ofinformation, continuity and adaptation, intelligibility and naturalness. With the research, the authorholds the view that the four principles can help translators to better translate the report with the targetlanguage.
