The Spirit of The Chinese Art, which is the most important aesthetic work of Hsu Foo-kwan, is referred to his criticism on the western modernism art. As a respond to the impulsion of the western culture, this book reflects the aesthetic view and Neo-Confucianism held by Hsu Foo-kwan. This thesis is dedicated to analyze the origin, purpose and dilemma of the aesthetic thoughts of Hsu Foo-kwan. Also it will point out the revision on the philosophy standpoint of the Neo-Confucianism in the aesthetic ideology of Hsu Foo-kwan. This thesis consists of three parts:The first chapter "The origin:the debate on the western modernism art and the cultural crisis" will review the debate between Hsu Foo-kwan and Liu Guosong. This chapter will focus on Hsu Foo-kwan’s main criticism of western modernism art and consider it as the immediate cause of the aesthetic ideology of Hsu Foo-kwan.The second chapter "A respond:the interpretation and intention of’the spirit of the Chinese art’" is based on the second chapter of the book. It will analyze the main purpose of Hsu Foo-kwan. Furthermore, this chapter will point out the tendency of subjective aesthetics of Hsu Foo-kwan and compare it with his philosophy standpoint of the Neo-Confucianism.The third chapter "The hope:the discovery of Life World and a transformation of Metaphysics" will mainly discuss the self-correcting of Hsu Foo-kwan. This chapter will also discuss the significance of the self-correcting to the contemporary thought, as well as the limitations of Hsu Foo-kwan.
