Problem Analysis And Countermeasures Against Problems In C-E Translated2012Report On The Work Of The Government (RWG)

Report on the Work of the Government (RWG), published by Chinese government annually, plays a decisive role in the exchange and communication between China and the rest of the world. Thus, the translation of RWG ranks the top in China’s international publicity translation. However, due to the differences between two cultures, translators have made many mistakes in such translations. Based on the Functionalist Theory, this thesis makes a systematic research on translation problems in2012RWG and works out some corresponding countermeasures to deal with such5kinds of typical problems in the C-E translated2012RWG as:(1) lack of political awareness;(2) defects in translating terms with Chinese characteristics;(3) improper translation of four-character phrases;(4) inaccurate collocation;(5) word redundancy.These problems have not only resulted in the misunderstanding of China’s information and policies, but also caused the distortion of Chinese government’s willpower, damaged the national sovereignty or even the international relations between China and other countries. It is an urge task for us to study and solve these problems. Supported by the Functionalist Translation Theory, this thesis proposes such5corresponding practical countermeasures against each problem as:(1) manifesting ideology and loyalty to deal with lack of political awareness;(2) fidelity in translating terms with Chinese characteristics;(3) applying translation models to deal with improper translation of four-character phrases, such as:A. Verb+(Noun)+to+(Verb)+Noun; B. One Adjective or Adverb; C. Verb+(preposition)+Noun;(4) keeping consistency and fidelity to deal with inaccurate collocation;(5) deleting or changing the words to deal with word redundancy.What the author has done in thesis may greatly help to improve the C-E translation quality of Report on the Work of the Government, so as to fully convey Chinese government’s policies.
