This report is a reflection and summary of the practice of simulation consecutiveinterpreting of a speech, addressed by the former U.S. ambassador to China—Gary Lockeat Beijing Foreign Studies University on September9,2011. The source text comes fromthe speech video downloaded from the Internet. The interpreter recorded the whole processof simulation consecutive interpreting through recording. After that, the interpreter listenedto the tape again and again. With the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory andreference to the source text, the interpreter analyzes her own version of interpretation fromdifferent angles and aspects. After a systematic case analysis, the author acquires usefulexperience and finds shortcomings related to simulation consecutive interpreting. Usefulexperience includes taking adequate preparations, enough background information andvocabulary, good physical and psychological state, etc., while weakness in listening andinsufficient vocabulary remains to be improved as shortcomings.By means of this simulation consecutive interpreting practice as well as rethinking ofinterpreting, the interpreter regards practice of simulation consecutive interpreting as animportant way for students majoring in interpreting to learn, practice and study, and also anenlightenment of more training chances for consecutive interpreters. Meanwhile, it ishoped that this report could provide readers with serviceable suggestions and be helpful toimprove the interpreter’s professional skills and ability as well.
