A Report On Simulated Interpretation Of Harvard University’s Open Course Justice

Interpreting,as a kind of translation activity,refers to the way that the interpreter interprets the source language into the target language.The author conducted an on-site simulated interpretation of Harvard University’s open course Justice.In the process of interpreting,by means of consecutive interpreting,the author provided the audience with a feeling of immersive listening experience.At present,most translations for the famous universities’ online open courses remain subtitle translation and there are very few interpretation of these famous universities’ online open courses.With more and more interpretation of famous universities’ open courses in the future,the domestic audience can not only appreciate the charm of the source language,but also can understand the content without the help of subtitles.The domestic audience could watch these famous universities’ open courses by listening to the simultaneous interpretation or consecutive interpretation in Chinese,so that they would experience a new form of watching these open courses,which is different from the previous watching experience.The material which was chosen for the practice of the on-site interpretation simulation is the first lecture The Moral Side of Murder and the second lecture The Case for Cannibalism of Harvard University’s open course Justice.The total length of the two lectures extending about 55 minutes.The questions from Professor Sandel,the students’ answers,discussions and other interactive sessions among the teacher and students were interspersed in the process of the two lectures.The total length of the interpreting simulation practice amounts to 2 hours.This interpreting simulation practice aimed at interpreting the content of the course by simulating the scene,which is different from the traditional way of subtitle translation.It provides the audience with a distinctive perspective to study the open courses of famous universities abroad.At the same time,the author found the shortcomings of himself and corrected them,which would lay a good foundation for the author in his future interpreting practice.Because of the time limit of on-site interpretation,the author was exposed to various stress,such as the speed of Professor Sandel,the usage of some dialects or slangs,the lack of professional knowledge and unfamiliarity with the terminology and proper nouns.To deal with the above mentioned stress,the author not only has to possess superior interpreting skills,but also has to own a strong psychological quality and the ability of coping with various unexpected situations calmly.Besides,acquiring the professional knowledge about the course Justice is also an important aspect for improving the quality of the author’s interpretation.This interpreting simulation practice of Harvard University’s open course Justice not only deepens the author’s interest in the open courses of famous universities,but also gives the author an opportunity to study the high-quality learning resource of famous universities,which not only enriches the author’s knowledge but also broadens the author’s horizon.In the process of interpretation,the author summarized the problems and mistakes that emerged in interpreting and the shortcomings of himself.Then the author found the solutions to these problems and corrected the mistakes,thus improving the author’s interpreting abilities and laying a good foundation for future interpreting practice with favorable guiding significance.
