The thesis is on the author’s performance in each step of the interpretingsimulation, with the aim of exploring feasible approaches to improvement ininterpreting quality. The research methods of the thesis are as follows:To begin with, the interpreting simulation involved in the thesis was designedand conducted by the author, under the guidance of the professionals who have not alittle experience in the practice of interpreting, in strict accordance with therequirements related. In order to simulate an interpreting project in terms of workingprocedure and environment, the author did a Chinese-to-English consecutiveinterpreting for Mrs. Xuan Songzhu, a successful agent from Merro InternationalBiology Co. Ltd., who was invited to deliver a speech on health during the simulation. After the simulation was completed, the author made a systematic analysis on thetranscription of the live recording of the simulation and other material. Theassessment was under the guidelines for interpreting quality being used by GraduateInstitute of Interpretation and Translation of Shanghai International Studies Universityas well as Shanghai Interpreting Accreditation Project. By making comparisonbetween the original interpretation and the personally revised interpretation, theauthor analyzed the interpreting problems from two aspects--accuracy andpresentation. The former involves the problems in main ideas, numbers, wording, adding and omitting, while the latter covers the deficiency in fluency, coherence, skillfulness and grammars. On further examination at the author’s interpretation as well as the theories andknowledge in interpreting training, teaching and practicing, the author summarizedsome approaches and key points in improving interpreting quality: four points for“pre-interpreting preparations”, including basic corpus, parallel reading, forecast andsimulation as well as communication with the speaker; two points for “languageprocessing”, including three points for implementing the awareness of deverbalizationas well as four points for improving fluency. The thesis is arranged as follows:The first chapter describes the natures of the interpreting simulation, includingthe background information and linguistic features of the speaker as well as thecontext, theme, and style of the speech. The second chapter expounds the process ofthe simulation, including the details of the author’s pre-interpreting preparations aswell as the actual conduct of the simulation. The third chapter analyzes the problemsin the author’s interpretation as well as their possible causes from the aspects of“accuracy” and “presentation”. The last chapter puts forwards some approaches toimproving interpreting quality from the aspects of “pre-interpreting preparations” and“language processing”.
