With the popularity of the network, more and more people choose to make friends in the network and thus producing a lot of dating sites. We are considering what are people depending on to accept a stranger to become his friends in online dating. Name? Appearance? Or both?Previous studies showed that the names of different sexual orientation will produce different degrees of impact regarding individual attraction. By dividing names into masculine names, feminine name, neutral name and appearance into high, medium and low levels, the authors conducted a series of experiments. Setting background in the Internet era, this thesis studied how gender specific names and degrees of facial attractiveness compensate each other in making friends on the site of "Renren.com". What’s more, this study also looked into the differences generated by the compensation effect in homosexual and heterosexual. The results show that, in the case of secondary and higher degree of attraction in the looks of strangers, people are more willing to accept strangers whose name and gender match to be friends in "Renren.com". While in the case of low degree facial attraction, even if the name looks attractive, the compensation effect is not obvious. This study also found out that users in the "Renren.com" are more willing to accept heterosexual friends; both men and women are more willing to accept secondary and higher degree of facial attractiveness as well as users whose names and genders match to become friends on "Renren.com". In other words, compensation generated by names and genders does not have any gender differences.In this study, human gender specific names and facial attractiveness are creativity applied to the study of interpersonal communication in the network. And it has a certain practical value. According to the research results, we can get a reasonable explanation for the phenomenon of social networking. Through the study of the relationship between name and facial attractiveness, we can give Some enlightenment and suggestion to the people who like online dating.
