Solfeggio is a basic course which plays an important role in ear-training and the professional education of music. It is also a combination of artistic, technical and theoretical courses. Since the born of Guido sol-fa in the11th century, it has been a thousand years for sol-fa to be developed, reformed and innovated by musicians in China and other countries which gradually became a critical issue in the teaching of Solfeggio. Musicians are now still searching in the way to find the most logical, simple form of sol-fa which could be suitable for the physiological feature of people. This article clarifies the definition of sol-fa, explains the reason and principle to use the sol-fa, analyses the advantages, disadvantages and the development and applications of sol-fa in China of traditional sol-fa (fixed-do system, tonic sol-fa system) and the semitone positioning solmization. It takes aim at finding a scientific and effective form of sol-fa which may be more suitable to the development of music education. This paper is divided into three chapters. The introduction section is a brief exposition of the current status of sol-fa and its drawbacks, leading to the purpose and significance of the writing of this article. The first chapter is about the concept and the principle of using sol-fa. This chapter is divided into two parts, the first part is talking about the meaning of sol-fa, which is not only determined by the interpretation from dictionary but also the concepts shaped during the practice of ear-training and the custom that most musicians have been used to lately. The second part is mainly talk about the principle and reason of choosing sol-fa. The principle is:to consider the auditory development of the students, the professional ability and the comprehensive analysis of aspects of the prevailing circumstances. The second chapter is about the status and applications of sol-fa in China. It analyse the advantages, disadvantages and the development and applications of sol-fa in China of traditional sol-fa (fixed-do system, tonic sol-fa system) in music education. The last chapter is about the development and applications of semitone positioning solmization in China. This chapter first describes the semitone positioning slomaization set by Mr. Zhu Shaokun and then illustrate that why it was adapted to the development of professional music education:it deeply strengthen the relationship between Solfeggio and singing, it do good to the practice of basic music theory, harmony, musical form and instrumental learning, it contributes to the complex development of modern music and the reform notation or other aspects of the system. Finally, it talks about the difficulties we face in the process of adapting sol-fa into the development of the professional music education. Personally speaking, I think that our country has such a big population that we should consider about the quality of our citizens and the state of our music education development, etc. We can not just pursue the new things instead of the old but to look upon the development of sol-fa to make a choice.
