It is a translation project report on the fourth and fifth chapters of Discovering the Dutch, On Culture and Society of the Netherlands. The source text is a thorough introduction of the social and cultural backgrounds of the Netherlands. The fourth and fifth chapters explore the famous city conurbation Randstad, its urban development and the participation of the Netherlands in global politics. The language of the source text is plain and concise.Under the guidance of functionalist translation theory, this project aims to discuss the translation methods of proper names. Accordingly, it introduced three commonly-used methods:semantic translation, transliteration and omission and two rules, i.e. the adaptation of the established popular translated names and the adaptation to original names. In addition, it also illustrates the translation techniques used to deal with some special sentences which is odd in the target language, such as, sentences with impersonal subjects and debilitated style. The translator solved this problem by adding proper personal subject and verbs. All in all, this essay indicates translation practice.
