In recent years,China and Australia have maintained a stable and close cooperative relationship.A deeper understanding between the two countries is conducive to the further development of bilateral relations.This paper is an English-Chinese translation practice report on “Exploration by Land” entry of The Australian Encyclopaedia Volume 2.The entry is a chronological description of the history of land exploration in Australia,including explorers,routes,results and the impact of exploration activities.In view of the fact that the encyclopedia is a typical informative text which committed to deliver information to a wide audience in simple and straightforward language forms,the translator chooses the communicative translation theory under Newmark's text typology as the guiding theory.In this report,the translator briefly introduces the background and characteristics of the source text,and the adopted translation theory strategies,describes the whole process of translation,including the preparation in pre-translation,the translation process and post-translation,and analyzes the translation techniques of long and complex sentences and proper names,such as name of person and geographical names,collected from the typical cases during the process of translating the source text in light of Newmark's communicative translation theory.Finally,the translator concludes the paper with experience summary and limitation reflects in the hope of serving as a useful reference for the translation practice of similar texts.
