A Study On The Translation Of Tendering Documents In Light Of Skopos Theory

With the fast development of economic globalization and trade liberalization, the volume of the international trade has increased rapidly. Accordingly, the tendering across countries and regions also witnesses a great increase. As one of the most effective means of international trade and commerce, tendering is the most important economic reform measures in all levels of life. Tendering behavior, in essence, belongs to a kind of legal act. So the translation of related documents is increasingly significant. In recent years, the demand for the translation of such documents increases rapidly. Accurate translation of tendering documents greatly affects the success of trade. However, study on the translation theory of relevant documents is rare and the translation of such documents is in an urgent need of comprehensive theoretical guidance.The thesis is going to explore the translation of tendering documents from the perspective of skopos theory. Firstly, the author will systematically review the main concepts and principles of skopos theory and current study at home and abroad. Then the author will make a comprehensive analysis of the lexis, syntax and style of tendering documents by citing a lot of translation examples and make clear the communicative function and text type of tendering documents. After that the author will discuss how to translate tendering documents under the guidance of three rules of skopos theory and apply skopos theory to the translation of tendering documents. Finally, two main translation methods and translator’s competence will be recommended. To begin with, the author shall have a good command of both the source language and the target language; then the translator shall grasp skills of translating tendering documents and have sufficient background knowledge of tendering documents; last but not the least, the translator shall have a high sense of responsibility and do a lot of translation exercises on tendering documents and make contributions to the translation in this field. The aim of this study is to make people understand the importance and value of the tendering document translation and attract people’s attention to the translation of tendering documents.
