Translatability Of Conceptual Metaphors In Simultaneous Interpreting In The Context Of Interpretive Theory

Based on the Interpretive Theory, the thesis proves that conceptual metaphors are translatable in simultaneous interpreting. The thesis adopts case study to analyze different translatability occurrences and interpreting strategies. President Xi Jinping’s speech at the closing session of the1st Session of the12th National People’s Congress and President Barack Obama’s second inaugural address are chosen as two cases to probe into the performances of the simultaneous interpreters when political conceptual metaphors occur. Translatability of conceptual metaphors in simultaneous interpreting is assessed by equivalence of sense and quality of delivery. The thesis draws a conclusion that translatability of conceptual metaphors frequently used in both source language and target language is high. If a conceptual metaphor does not have equivalent expression in target language, its translatability is reduced. With proper strategies adopted, translatability can be improved. Strategies to cope with the conceptual metaphor in simultaneous interpreting have been proposed.
