This report is based on the author’s interpreting task of the lecture Writing a Successful Speech by Dr.Mark H.Levine who is a professor at Minzu University of China. The task of simultaneous interpreting was carried under the guidance of Gile’ s Effort Model. The report analyzes the interpretation of the lecture and summarizes difficulties that the author encountered in simultaneous interpreting. In task description, the features of the task are presented and the theoretical basis is introduced. The task process consists of "pre-interpreting preparation","interpreting" and "post-task assessment"."Pre-interpreting preparation" is divided into two parts according to the focus on information collection and equipment preparation. The difficulties and problems the authors came across in the interpreting process are summarized as redundancy, disjointed sentences, fast speaking, slips of the tongue and colloquial language.Discourse analysis is applied to interpret the discourse from both structural level and semantic level.Under the guidance of Gile’s Effort Model and according to the principle of syntactic linearity and faithfulness, the report discusses what techniques can improve the utilization of the efforts and interpreting performance.Techniques such as chunking, anticipation, omission, addition and paraphrasing are applied to deal with the difficulties and problems. These techniques are proved to be useful and helpful in on-site interpreting. Conclusions can be drawn from the analysis as follows: first, preparations are crucial including pre-interpreting preparation and accumulation of both linguistic and extra-linguistic knowledge;second, application of certain techniques is beneficial to the quality of interpretation. |
