This report is a reflection and summary on a simulated English-Chinesesimultaneous interpreting practice of Obama’s State of the Union Address from theperspective of Interpretive Theory. The purpose is to improve the theoretical knowledgeand practical skills of interpreting. The practice material was downloaded from theInternet. The author conducted a simultaneous interpreting task with text andaudio-recorded the whole process. After that, the audio file was transferred into text andanalyzed based on the Interpretive Theory from different perspectives. After asystematic case analysis, the feasible tactics and methods were proposed to form aworkable mode so that it can guide similar interpreting jobs in future. Meanwhile,adequate preparations, enough background information and vocabulary, good physicaland psychological state are also the factors which should be taken into consideration.Under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory, the author expects to overcome theproblems and to improve interpreting skills.This report combines the process of simulation interpreting, preparation beforeinterpreting, problems and tactics with the analysis of examples in the interpreting.Through this simulated simultaneous interpreting practice as well as rethinking of thisexperience, practice of simulated simultaneous interpreting is regarded as an importantway for students majoring in interpreting, and also an enlightenment of more trainingchances for interpreters. It is anticipated that through this report, suitable interpretingmethods, techniques and tactics can be utilized to improve the author’s and otherinterpreter’s professional skills and abilities as well.
