Long Sentences In English-Chinese Translation:Reflection On Translation Of Death, Sleep&the Traveler

The translation of long English sentences is one of the most difficult aspects during English-Chinese translation. The structure of English long sentences with more than one subordinate clause is sometimes much more complicated than the Chinese ones, in this way, translators need to choose the correct methods when dealing with long English sentences.On the basis of the translation of John Hawkes’work Death, Sleep&the Traveler, this paper aims to analyze the use of syntactic linearity method, cutting method and synthetic method which are summarized by Liu Miqing.The conclusion of this paper is that the translation methods of English long sentences summarized by Liu Miqing are useful in the translation of Death, Sleep&the Traveler. When dealing with literary works, translators need to take the author’s intension into consideration and retain the literariness.
