A Practice Report On The Translation Of Non-subject Sentence In Port Authorities Operation Regulation

Maritime documents, which cover a large scale ranging from regulations to strategy for conventions, need to be translated into English when used internationally. Thus, two maritime documents are chosen and translated in this report, which aims to discuss the effective translation strategies for non-subject sentence in such documents.Non-subject sentence is Chinese specific kind of sentences. Subject is necessary in English grammar. Sentences couldn’t be complete without subject. However, non-subject sentence in Chinese doesn’t need subject to make the sentence complete and it won’t influence the meaning of the sentence. When translating such sentences, there may exist some trouble for the translator.Translation strategies on the non-subject sentence in the Port Authorities Operation Regulation are presented in this paper, and sentence examples in this article as well as some sentence examples in is listed to illustrate these strategies The report consists of four parts: chapter one is a brief introduction to the translation tasks; chapter two is translation process; chapter three presents the translation strategies for the non-subject sentence with examples, in which the definition of non-subject sentence and its causes are discussed. The strategies are as follows: using "there be" sentences; using passive voice; adding a subject or transferring non-subject part into subject. Chapter four is a conclusion.
