| Product operation manual is the accurate and concise text material that producers use to introduce the name,functions,operations,precautions and other details about the product.It plays an important role in promoting products and attracting consumers' attention.In the context of deepening economic globalization,Chinese enterprises cannot ignore the translation of product manual which is a significant part of their products if they want to gain better access to markets all over the world.Translation that is accurate and in line with the reading habits of foreign consumers not only enables the consumers to grasp the operations and precautions of their products quickly,but also makes their products stand out from many homogenous products,which means that the enterprise can gain the upper hand in the beginning.However,the:translation quality of product manual on the market is far from satisfactory.More efforts should be made to change the worrisome situation.This report is based on the translation of NHR-8700C Touch Color Paperless Recorder Operation Manual.Guided by the "Read,Adapt and Write" model advanced by Lin Ke-nan(2003),this report analyzes the syntactic features of English product manuals exhaustively,such as the frequent use of simple sentences,passive voice,imperative sentences,elliptical sentences,and non?predicate verbs.However,long and complicated sentences,active voice and repeated information are common in Chinese product manuals.Moreover,more than one verbs can be found in one sentence.Therefore,in order to conform to the syntactic features of English product manuals,translators should adjust sentence structure consciously when translating.This report offers some specific sentence adjustment methods such as division,transfer of voice,use of imperative sentences and so on.The purpose of the translation practice is to provide some references and suggestions for the translation of similar product manuals,so as to improve the quality of product manual translation. |
