A Study Of The English Translation Of Red Sorghum From The Perspective Of Eco-Translatology

Red Sorghum is a masterpiece written by Nobel Prize winner Mo Yan. Since its publication of1986, it has been very popular in the Chinese literary field. The English version, which is translated by the American sinologist Howard Goldblatt, has been one of the bestsellers since it was published abroad in1993. So far, the studies of the Chinese version of Red Sorghum have been very common, but Howard Goldblatt and his translation have not been paid due attention.The Eco-translatology of Professor Hu Gengshen was first put forward in2001, which effectively combined ecology and translatology together so as to reveal the essence of translation. This new theory regards the translator as the center, and takes translation process as the adaptation and selection of the translator in the translational eco-environment. In this thesis, the Eco-translatology of Professor Hu Gengshen is selected as researching theory so as to study and analyze the chosen text—Red Sorghum.This thesis adopts Eco-translatology as the theoretical framework, introduces the original text, the translation and the translational eco-environment, and analyzes the translator’s adaptation and selection in the eco-environment from the linguistic dimension, the cultural dimension and the communicative dimension. The languages and cultures between the western world and China are greatly different, so in order to respect Chinese culture in his translation, Howard Goldblatt retains most of the language style so as to vividly reproduce the original novel, which makes the integration of adaptation and selection achieve the best degree.This thesis aims to analyze the translation version of Red Sorghum with the method of three-dimensional transformation, so as to reflect the impact of the eco-environment on translator’s adaptation and selection in translation process, thus confirming the feasibility and applicability of Eco-translatology. At the same time, it aims to make the-translation field pay high attention to Howard Goldblatt’s work and promote scholars’research on his translation.
