Chinese Locative Phrase is an indispensable part of daily communication. It rendersnot only the important concepts of time and space, but abstract concepts of condition,range, scale, etc. Therefore, it has aroused plenty of controversies and studies in the field ofLinguistic Ontology. Locative Phrase is one of the important phases in second languageteaching. Based on the Chinese compositions of American students who have enrolled theCLSP program as corpus and supplied by HSK Corpus, this thesis has discovered multipleerrors of overseas students in using Locative Phrase, especially in rendering abstractconcepts, such as incomplete structure of locative phrase, locative phrase structureredundancy, misuse and disordered sequence of locative phrase. These errors are de factodue to the factors of negative transference of mother tongue, over generalization of targetcontext, mislead in teaching, linguistic prevalence, etc. Therefore, Locative Phrase is adifficult aspect in terms of Chinese language acquisition for overseas students. Moreover,this thesis has probed into the textbooks and extra Chinese teaching materials used byoverseas students in Soochow University, hereinafter discovered errors of textbooks suchas flawed structure, redundancy, disconnection between teaching and practicing, lack offocus on extra practice, etc by contrasting to HSK Competence Scale and GrammarOutlines. Finally the author proposes feasible suggestions in accordance with the author’sexperiences in teaching in order to promote a refined system in textbooks and classteaching, hence in forth to help overseas students develop good mastery of LocativePhrase.
