The end of Qing Dynasty posed a new modernity context for Chinese culture of choosing between accepting of rejecting western culture.which arises from the shock of western thoughts and ideas acting to a "challenge-response" model. Calligraphy, as one mark of Chinese traditional culture, is among this flood of modernity concerns. Conflicting ideas around humanity ecology, in such aspects as Philology, Literariness, Creative Subjects, Subject Construction, Academic Lineage, all came to the surface. This paper tries to reflect on the development of Chinese Calligraphy during this period, in search for exploring the efforts of modern thinkers and calligraphers in maintaining a unique and national tradition, and continuing this academic lineage. It also aims at highlighting a viable path under the international cultural context. Here present three focuses:first, the conflict between treating words as tools and treating calligraphy as art; second, the relationship between cultural modernity and nationality of calligraphy; third, interaction between the "Renaissance" at early Republic of China and the subject construction of calligraphy.
