As a rich cultural connotation of the carrier, culture-loaded words are able to reflect the colorful and distinctive culture of a language-spoken group. They enable us to better understand and comprehend national and regional culture and bridge the two sides of communication. Because of this, Lin Yutang, in the process of creating his works, tries to use culture-loaded words to help the westerners to better understand China and its culture.Moment in Peking, a long English novel written by Dr. Lin Yutang from1938to1939when he lived in Paris, makes great contributions to the promotion of Chinese culture around the world by introducing the Chinese society at that time to the world. One conspicous feature of the novel is many South Fujian culture-loaded words were used due to Lin Yutang’s life-long homesickness and his own creation inspiration attributed to his mountainous hometown. As far as the Chinese translation of Moment in Peking is concerned, the one that pays little attention to South Fujian culture-loaded words in the book is unlikely to convey its original flavor and restore the true meaning that Dr. Lin Yutang wanted to express. In the process of translating culture-loaded words, the cultural information and image as well as the transformation of the language should be taken into account. Therefore, the translation of South Fujian culture-loaded words in Moment in Peking becomes one of the most difficult points. On this, Nida’s Equivalence Theory offers a feasible and practical solution. The theory stresses the readers as the center and "the translation is supposed to the closest natural equivalent", that is, the readers of the two languages of feelings should be roughly the same; it also holds to achieve functional equivalence, i.e. both the form of expression and culture should be considered in the target language, which advocates the domestication translation strategy.Following the vein, this thesis conducts a comparative study on the translations of South Fujian culture-loaded words in two Chinese versions, both adopting the domestication translation strategy, of Moment in Peking. It seems to prove that domestication under theoretical perspective of Nida’s Equivalence Theory can make the translation of cultural meaning, image and information the closest natural equivalence to the original text.
