Sheng is a reed-pipe musical instrument with a long history in China. Among inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells unearthed in Yinxu (the ruins of Yin, capital of the Shang Dynasty,1401BC-1122BC),"(?)" which reads "he" has been regarded as the pictograph of "sheng" according to experts. It is thus clear that sheng has a history of over three thousand years. With a beautiful sound, the playing skills of sheng are rich and changeful. It also has strong performance capacity and is well-liked by rulers and folks in ancient times. Even to this day, working people in China have become fond of sheng, which is indispensable in activities such as weddings and funerals in the folk. In professional concerts, sheng is an expressive musical instrument, which can not only fully express the music in solo but also serve as foil in ensemble. Therefore more folk music practitioners and music lovers begin to learn to play sheng nowadays. And the art of sheng playing also begins to develop towards diversification.Over the years, the playing skills of sheng and the creation of music have been developing rapidly. And the playing of sheng has been set as a major in colleges and universities. The author learned playing skills from sheng performers in the folk at early age and has mastered many traditional songs of sheng. After entering the college, the author has been learning to play sheng from Professor Li Guanglu and came into contact with more diversified forms of music, finding that the playing skills of sheng, expression forms of music, shape and structure of sheng in the folk are quite different. In order to improve our level of playing, the author begins to think about ways to achieve this goal. Through years of study and accumulation, reading literature on the art of playing sheng, and comparing playing characteristics of different areas and different schools, the author has found that the art of playing sheng in the folk has a profound connection with that of academism.Sheng has entered the stage of solo for only sixty years. It has previously acted as the role of accompaniment in folk music. So there are many disadvantages in playing skills of sheng and diversification of music. Professor Li Guanglu is from the countryside in Henan Province and later got admitted to college. So he has a good understanding of folk music. Over the years, his professional quality has been constantly improved and he has absorbed the advantages of national folk music extensively. He has also reformed sheng inclusively and has popularized music of different schools in different areas. Besides, he has scientifically improved playing skills of sheng, has a further study of teaching and theories, and has standardized playing on the stage, thus forming a relatively scientific teaching model that combines folk skills and professional ones. Professor Li Guanglu has taken in advantages of schools in different areas and has seen the disadvantages of sheng’s development, scientifically improving the teaching and playing of sheng through years of research and practical experience. It can be said that Professor Li Guanglu has scientifically concluded the diversification of playing sheng and has been using it in teaching and playing in a good way.
