The Free Schools in Hunan Province were prosperous in the Qing Dynasty. Under the instruction of the Qing Government, this kind of primary education had gradually developed to the Free Education offering education opportunities for children from poor families and people of ethnic minorities.The Free Schools in Hunan Province was one of the typical representatives of the Free Education in the Qing Dynasty, which was an overall interpretation of its developments and changes in various aspects. However, currently, available studies of the the Free Education in Hunan Province principally referred to the education in the areas inhabited by Miao Qing Western education, lacking of the overall study of the Free Education in Hunan Province from historical perspective on a macro level.Taking the advantage of existing relevant information, this paper, through case studies on the the Free Education in Hunan Province in the Qing Dynasty, explored the changes of the the Free Education and the evolution of the national education policy in the Qing Dynasty. To accomplish the research, this paper adopted research methods like comparison, documentary review and case study, etc.Three parts were included in this paper-Introduction, Body and Conclusion. The Introduction part illustrated the reasons and significance of selecting the thesis, current researches of it and research ideas&methods.The Body was divided into four parts, respectively discussed the following issues:the first chapter expounded the historical background of the establishment of Free Schools in Hunan Province in the Qing Dynasty including, firstly, the origins of the Free Education, secondly, the development of the Free Education in the Qing Dynasty, as well as the general situation of politics,economy, culture and education in the Qing Dynasty.The second chapter gave an thorough analysis of the spatial and temporal distribution of the Free Education in Hunan Province in the Qing Dynasty.Based on development situation in different periods, it could be divided into four stages-rise,development,climax and decline. Spatial distribution and its characteristics were mainly analyzed from the perspective of different government states,urban and rural areas and ethnic groups.The third chapter explored the operational status of the Free Education in Hunan Province in the Qing Dynasty. Complete teaching facilities,standardized teaching management and stable teaching funds were necessary for the normal operations of the Free Education. The operational management of the Free Education in Hunan Province in the Qing Dynasty was not only standardized, but also flexible.The fourth chapter discussed the historical influences of the Free Education in Hunan Province in the Qing Dynasty.Development of the Free Education in Hunan Province in the Qing Dynasty helped to popularize the local culture and education, impel the transformation of outmoded habits and customs through helpful indoctrination,which had greatly promoted the stability of the ruling orders in local society.The Conclusion part summarized the main ideas of this paper and further described the program and form of the Free Education in Hunan Province in the Qing Dynasty.
