The theme of this thesis is the importance of deverbalization to delivery in consecutive Chinese-English interpretation. This thesis is based on a case study of “China’s Financial Reform†at2013Shanghai Forum Mock Conference. First, this thesis analyzes the author’s performance in C-E interpretation at the mock conference resulting from insufficiency in deverbalization. It compares the original speech with the interpretation and list examples of insufficiency in deverbalization. Then it discusses two major aspects of deverbalization, explaining from the perspectives of logic and language. It also probes into deverbalization tactics which can be used in C-E interpreting. Finally, it summarizes the long-term solutions in terms of deverbalization in C-E interpretation, underscoring the importance of accumulating background knowledge and enhancing ability to understand Chinese. The aim of this thesis is to help interpreters better avoid word-for-word interpreting and convey the information intended by speakers so as to facilitate the communication between speaker and audience. |
