| By analyzing Jean Valjean’s screen images in the movie Les Miserables2012,depicted as an ex-convict24601to Le Mayor Madeline and finally transformed into atriumphant Christian as a copy of Christ, this thesis intends to investigate the threeChristianity themes--salvation, spiritual trials and triumphant Christian.Although the gospel of Jesus Christ is pervasive, Christian movie Les Miserables2012used a Hollywood way to preach a gospel that encourages Christians to strive tobe a triumphant Christian just like Jean Valjean whose thorough transformation is soamazing, so complete and so God. Valjean’s glowing Christian character inspires andilluminates millions of audiences.Chapter One explicates Jean Valjean, ex-convict24601, accepts God’s salvationwhich symbolized by two candlesticks given by the Bishop. In order to better explainthe idea of salvation, the classic movie Shawshank’s Redemption has also beenanalyzed and compared. Chapter Two focuses on why Jean Valjean gives up the nobleLe Mayor identity to save an innocent man with a similar face to him. Stories fromsome popular American popular gospel movies will be cited as examples to explainthe concept of spiritual battles in Christianity. Chapter Three analyzes Jean Valjean istransformed into a victorious Christian by showing that he chooses to save Fantineand to adopt her child, Cosette, and give his beloved Cosette to Marius at last, andwhat motivates Jean Valjean to forgive his enemy Javart is also included. In the endJean Valjean died, who lived fully as a Christian. His life story is a great testimony ofGod’s mercy. The thesis further concludes that triumphant roles in Christianity movieshave some practical usages in popular culture media.With described key scenes in the movie and Christian Theology about salvation,spiritual battles and triumphant Christian, how a person can be converted into atriumphant Christian, transcend his nature, and choose a nobler path in order to fulfillGod’s plan will be unfolded. |
