Interpretation Of The Old Photo"Down To The Countryside Movement": Study On The Manifestation Of"Educated Youths-Related" Themes In Public Art Work

The Up to the Mountains and Down to the Countryside Movement started in the mid of1950s, reached its peak in1968and ended just before the beginning of the reform and opening up, involving approximate17million educated youths. This Movement almost affected all Chinese families. It not only imposed profound influence on the youths of that generation and changed their life, but also twisted the social development track of China. Though the same youth, the treatment was totally different. The wheel of history had created the glorious life of youths in May4Event, but the lives of the youths going to the countryside were dim and forgotten. How shall the young generation born between1980and1990judge them? This is a topic worth a lot of thinking.The old pictures of educated youths going to and working in the countryside are the presentation of history. Through the pictures, visitors can learn the history and be shocked in the heart. Confronting the history can not only warn the contemporary people but also caution the future Chinese not to commit the same mistakes again.The exploration of the true historical verification from the memory of that time via the interpretation of the old pictures through public artistic work, the collection, compilation and study on information such as old pictures, oral account, poems, etc. of the educated youth going to the countryside, and the new presentation mode through public art, including oil pictures engraved on corroded aluminum sheet, documentaries displayed by multimedia, collection and display of material objects, public art devices, restoration of historic scenes, etc., generate a museum without wall. In this way, cares from the art circles to the group of educated youths going to the countryside can be made, and the objective of having the later generations learn the history can be realized.At present, the studies on the culture of educated youths going to the countryside are mostly focused on films and television programs and literatures, and public art works with the educated youths as the theme are few, not to mention the outstanding cases. Considering from the academic side, the study on the educated youths shall be further conducted to suit the requirements of national and social development.
