With the numerous glories in reform and opening up, China has played an increasingly important role in the global political and economic patterns. Under this condition, the translation of official documents is in critical need. This thesis, therefore, centers on the C-E translation of《选官与治官》--The Selection and Administration of Cadres, a kind of official document, with the theoretical guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory, and the adoption of Newmark’s communicative translation strategy and some effective translation techniques. Based on the translation practice, it completes a research on the official document through case studies, and conducts detailed case analysis on the translation difficulties such as abbreviations, numeral slogans, political terms, category words, non-subject sentences, and long sentences at the lexical, syntactic, and textual level. After a systematic exposition, the thesis gets the following conclusion: the features of official document determine that functional equivalence can act as a very good guiding principle in the C-E translation of official documents. It also provides some findings and suggestions beneficial to the future translation research on the related translation of official documents.
