Impact Of Accents On Interpreting And Tactics In E-C Consecutive Interpretation

English has become the world’s lingua franca and been widely used in international politics, economic, cultural cooperation, etc. Under many important circumstances, such as international meetings, speakers whose mother tongues are not English have to deliver speeches in English. Their strong accent not only exerts negative influence on interpreters’performance, but also adds great pressure to them. According to Gile’s Effort Models, dealing with speeches with strong accent, interpreters tend to devote much processing capacity to the Listening and Analysis Effort, and therefore slows down production or results in substantial loss of information. Therefore, the study on how accent influences interpreters and the responding tactics is of great significance.This paper uses Daniel Gile’s Effort Model to study how accent influences the English Chinese consecutive interpretation process, and by analyzing the experiment data and questionnaire give out responding tactics. The paper has six chapters: Chapter1Introduction; Chapter2Theories; Chapter3Literature Review; Chapter4Experiment; Chapter5Experiment Result and Analysis; Chapter6Summary.According to the experiment, questionnaire, quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis, the research concludes:Accented English has negative impact on interpreters’performance. The responding tactics are language techniques and extra linguistic knowledge. Language techniques refer to better understanding of the non-native speakers’accent characteristics; extra linguistic knowledge refers to encyclopedia knowledge as well as good situational knowledge.
