An Analysis On The Disyllabic Words In Liu Zongyuan’s Prose

The Eight Tang-Song Prose Masters’ works are the most typical representatives ofarchaistic classical Chinese prose. It involves innovation rather than simple imitation ofPre-Qin linguistics. Therefore, it inevitably contains some linguistic phenomena that theauthor is familiar to. Academic circles mainly center on the research of literary aspect of LiuZongyuan’s prose but concentrate insufficiently on the research of linguistic aspect of that sofar. According to the author’s statistics, recently there is hardly a comprehensive and in-deepstudy of disyllabic words in Liu Zongyuan’s prose. The study of disyllabic words in LiuZongyuan’s prose is not only helpful to study archaistic classical Chinese prose, but issignificant to study ancient Chinese and Chinese language history as well.370articles form Liu Zongyuan’s prose are selected, from which2792disyllabic wordsfrom15,0000coypus are analyzed. This paper collects comprehensively the disyllabic wordsin Liu Zongyuan’s prose and then classifies them and scientifically describes them staticallyso that represent the development history of individual words in disyllabic system throughdiachronic evolution.The paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is exordium, explaining thereason that disyllabic words in Liu Zongyuan’s prose are analyzed and their research status;The second chapter deals with the establishment of standard of disyllabic words on basis ofprevious standard and the splits the sentences into disyllabic words in order to collect the2792disyllabic words in Liu Zongyuan’s prose; The third chapter describes statically theclassification of disyllabic words and analyzes their internal structure in order to reveal thecharacteristics of disyllabic words in Liu Zongyuan’s prose. This paper focuses on theanalysis on the joint production and only gives some examples to the rest of the structure ofproduction; The fourth chapter has a diachronic study on the disyllabic words and dividesthem into the Pre-Qin vocabulary, Han Dynasty vocabulary, Wei Jin and Six Dynastiesvocabulary and Sui and Tang Dynasties vocabulary to discover their origin and comb theirdevelopment vein with dictionaries.The fifth chapter explores the corpus linguistic value ofdisyllabic words in Liu Zongyuan’s prose through the statistics about the words out of theGreat Chinese Dictionary as the first documentary evidence and the words only from Liu Zongyuan’s prose as the documentary evidence of words; Appendix is general catalogue ofLiu Zongyuan’s prose.
