With the sustained development of Chinese economy and the increasingly frequentinternational exchanges, the number of letter words continues to increase and their usingscopes keep expanding. The rapid development of letter words has aroused extensive concern;many scholars have done a lot of researches on letter words, including their classification,definition and researches, etc. But there still exists insufficiency in many ways, especially theresearches on teaching Chinese as a foreign language. This paper proposes the classification,definition and related researches of letter words based on the previous studies. This paperinvestigate the foreign students of Hebei Normal University and Hebei Medical University,try to study their cognitive situation of letter words under the influence of Chinese learningstage, country, culture, second language and gender as well as their ways of contacting letterwords and attitude towards the letter words study, and finally make some recommendationson letter words teaching from the teaching Chinese as a foreign language based on theresearch results.This paper is divided into six parts.The introduction section introduces the research background, research methods, contentsand the structure of this thesis, and introduces some related research on letter words.The first chapter mainly introduces the letter words’ definition, classification and relatedresearches. First of all, in this paper, combining the research needs, I put forward my ownview on the definition of letter words based on the previous research. Secondly, summarizethe advantages and disadvantages of previous studies on the classification of letter words andput forward the classification of letter words in the questionnaire, mainly from two angles,the ways of formation and the semantic categories. Finally, I introduce the academic attitudesand put forward our attitude about the letter words, which is, we should look at letter wordsdialectically.The second chapter mainly describes the survey design and enforcement of the foreignstudents’ cognitive situation on letter words, including letter words’ choice, surveymethodology, questionnaire design, and the selection of the investigation subject and surveyimplementation. The third chapter analyzes the foreign students’ cognitive situation on letter words. First,through the analysis of the factors which affect foreign students’ awareness of letter words,we can conclude that Chinese learning stage is the main factor that affect the degree ofawareness, following by second language, then by the country and culture, the influence ofgender on the degree of awareness is very small. Secondly, through the analysis of letterwords’ rate of utilization, we find that the students’ usage of letter words is affected by thedegree of awareness; awareness is the key determinant of the level of usage. Thirdly, thesurvey found that the foreign students’ main ways of contacting letter words are throughnetwork, radio and television, the way to learn letter words through Chinese learning in classis very rare. Finally, we analyze the foreign students’ attitude towards learning letter wordsand found that the majority of students have a positive attitude on letter words. They thinkthat learn letter words is helpful to their Chinese language learning and they want to learnmore letter words. Besides, a majority of students thinks that letter words are difficult to learn,mainly because the meaning of the letter words is difficult to understand, and there is nouniform standard of pronunciation.The fourth chapter mainly put forward some suggestions towards the teaching Chineseas a foreign language based on the findings. It first introduced the necessity of letter wordsteaching in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Second, illustrate that the letter wordsteaching should follow the principle of appropriateness and flexibility. Finally, introduce thedifferent teaching strategies for students with different backgrounds and different ways ofwords formation.The conclusion of this paper summarizes the results of the investigation and the mainconclusions and points out the shortcomings of this article.
