Since China is developing so fast that its cultural soft power is increasing at the same time. Accompanied by the great rejuvenation of the cultural renaissance, much more attention is paid to the’culture going out’ strategy. China is transmitting Chinese culture during the cross-culture communication to achieve the communicative purpose, and at the same time, the world is eager to know more about China and Chinese culture. Chinese culture is rich and profound, which reflects in words are plenty of culture-loaded words. These culture-loaded words reveal unique Chinese features and profound connotations. They play an important role in the cross-culture communication and are the shadows of Chinese culture; however, it is difficult to translate them. China’s English newspapers and periodicals are the windows for foreign readers to know about China, therefore, the culture-loaded words in them are more easily seen by foreign readers, so study how to translate them is important.According to Functionalist Skopos Theory, the function and purpose of translation decide the translation strategies and make the translation strategies more reasonable and scientific. Therefore, the thesis is focused on the C-E translation of culture-loaded words from the perspective of Functionalist Skopos Theory. First, to prove that the culture-loaded words have translatability and the translatability refers to the close equivalent response of source readers and target readers. Second, to put forward three principles for translating culture-loaded words in newspapers and periodicals. The most important part is the analysis and discussion the translation strategies: documentary translation and instrumental translation. Last but not the least, based on the translation strategies of the selected examples, conclude some influencing factors. In short, Functionalist Skopos Theory can lead the translation of culture-loaded words to achieve communicative purpose.
