Language Textbooks include four parts:Text system,Knowledge system, Operatingsystem and Help reading system, which are mutually complementary. The help readingsystem plays an especially important role in the textbooks in terms of the specialty ofteaching Chinese as a foreign language. Here the author makes a study in the Help readingsystem in "New Practical Chinese Reader", which is published by the Beijing Languageand Culture University Publishing House.Firstly, the thesis presents the compiling background, compiling style and thedistribution of help reading system in "New Practical Chinese Reader". Secondly, thethesis analyzes four parts of help reading system: photos, hints, notes and key points,discuss the problems and giving the corresponding solutions. Finally, on the basis ofstudying textbooks and documents, this thesis makes two suggestions to the help readingsystem about compiling and utilizing. In terms of compiling, the editor should adhere tothe scientific, systematic, interesting and practical principles, take full use of askingquestions and photos, diagrams, multi-media and so on. In the aspect of utilizing, teachersshould change their teaching concept after getting a clear understanding of the help readingsystem. They can create problem situation to guide students to solve problems. As forstudents, they can learn by themselves, cooperative work and searching for other learningmaterials with the help of reading system. I hope that this thesis can provide some usefulideas for the help reading system in textbooks of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
