Electoral system, party system and parliamentary system constitute the three pillarsof the capitalist representative democracy. The presidential election, as an importantpart of the electoral system, is thus regarded as the most important and direct symbolof this democracy. The U.S. presidential election demonstrates that democracy inAmerica carries its own unique cultural imprints and historical imprints. Americansshow a deep reverence for the election process. In an American context, the generalelection is a necessary step for the realization of democracy and also the verydefinition of US model of democracy. Both in theory and in practice, the U.S.presidential election is in line with American democracy.As a highlight of system of democracy, the U.S. presidential electoral system lies atthe core of U.S. national politics. Quadrennial U.S. presidential election is not only amajor event in American political life, but also attracts widespread public attention inthe international community. It is recognized that the United States boasts the world’smost mature democracy, and its presidential election becomes the most importantsymbol for US model of democracy.From the perspective of presidential electoral system in the United States, thispaper analyzes the relationship between American democracy and the electoral system.The presidential election provides us with a rare example to understand US model ofdemocracy. With a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between the U.S.presidential electoral system and democracy, this paper aims to explain the reason forthe existence of the U.S. presidential election and its inevitability. It is desirable thatthis paper could be instrumental for people in a more insightful understanding ofAmerican presidency and democracy.
