India’s northeast region is located in the crossroads of the Chinese civilization, Indian civilization and Islamic civilization. The region is just like a reservoir in the movement of ethnic migration. Different reasons promoted different people with different cultures to enter the area and lived for generations down. So then the region becomes into an area which has the most complex race composition, the most complex ethnic relations and the most multi-culture.The problems accompanied by the migration were racial contradictions, ethnic strife, proliferation of terrorism and other anti-government armed activities which were harmful to the peace and stability of India’s northeast region. The author divided India immigration history into two stages:the period before India’s independence and the period after its independence, and discussed the serious immigration questions and anti-government activities caused by immigration problems about Assam and Tripura. At last the author made a discussion on the countermeasures to immigrations and rebels taken by Indian government.First of all, the author made a simple generalization in the following aspects: geographical environment, natural resources, administrative divisions, ethnic and demographic composition, as well as a brief history of Northeastern India in ancient times and British colonial period. Secondly, India independence is the cutoff-point which divided the history of the immigration of Northeastern India into two stages. The history of immigration before India’s independence can also divided into two parts:the ancient period and the British colonial period. The history of immigration after India’s independence can be divided into two parts by India-Pakistan war. The author made a thorough analysis on immigration problems and anti-government activities caused by immigration problems. Once again, the author made a detailed description of the immigration problems and anti-government activities caused by immigration problems about Assam and Tripura. Finally, India government takes a measure to the problem of illegal immigrants and rebels caused by immigration problems. Sum up, immigrants of Northeastern India mainly come from Bangladesh, some are from Nepal, and a small amount from Myanmar and Bhutan. Immigrants entered this area and the local’s living space and a variety of resources were squeezed, which caused the conflict between locals and immigrants. Immigration problems, separatism and anti-government armed activities are intertwined, which made the northeastern region unrest. In order to calm the situation in Northeastern India, the Indian government takes several ways to deal with it, such as the political talks, a military strike, and foreign cooperation with neighboring countries and so on. After decades of efforts, the situation in Northeastern India is generally palliative, and illegal immigration is preliminarily under control. But due to the failure to seize the root which caused tense situation in this region, if the problems of Northeastern India are wanted to be solved completely, the Indian government still has a long way to go.
