After the cold war, national image as an important variable of soft power has its strategicvalue. It affects a country’s strategic policy formulation and the realization of the interests ofthe country. At the same time national image is the implementation of tools and instrumentsfor national interests. Especially under the globalization, the status and role of national imageis increasingly prominent. Governments are actively making effort to shape the good image ofthe country in order to increase its influence in the international arena and control.In recent years, political and economic situation of East Asia presents a complicated andchangeable situation, on the one hand, the economic interdependence between countriesdeepened; on the other hand, various security pressures appear frequently. As a power countryin East Asia, in order to achieve renaissance dream, it is necessary to use national image as apowerful means to prolong the period of strategic opportunities of China’s peacefuldevelopment, which is the core issue of this paper intended to implement. This paper willdiscuss the value of this concept in China and coping strategies in four parts: the first part isthe definition and interpretation of national image. The second part discusses China’s strategicvalue in shaping national image in East Asia; The third part focus on the basis of China’snational image is created in East Asia. The forth part state the approach of how China shapethe national image in East Asia region from three elements which are the state power position,economic and cultural.
