"Yue Ji"(music book) which is produced in the period of Pre-Qin, have beenregarded as "the first systemic art theory monograph throughout history in China" bythe academic circle. Such praise proves that people have noticed the value of "Yue Ji"in the music naesthetics and literary theory research. Even though it is not a magnumopus but it is broad and profound and is worth our study on it. But in consider of thepast, many scholars either adhere to the research of meaning about Yue Ji, or interestedin Yue Ji’s preach and note work. There are few special and in-depth study. Actually,"Yue Ji" not only inherited the predecessors’ knowledge, but also benefited theoffspring. So it can be seen as the masterpiece of the ancient music theory in China. In"yue ji"the character "yue" is not just a pure art form. From more in-depth look, it isalso a kind of culture type which manifests functions of moral symbol and isconsidered as a effective medium in ideological education. It condenses the essencesof ancient music theory and as an exotic flower among human music culture, evennowadays, it also provides meaningful and valuable study. This paper will investigatethe “the rule of virtue” in it and asking for more valuable views about the “Yue Ji”This paper will lay emphasis on the thought of “the rule of virtue” with thepurpose of through ancient music life to see the function of music education in ancienttimes in the the aspects of moral education and the function of the rule of virtue.Except the literature review the paper is divided into five characters.Chapter one explores who the author is. Studies find that there are arguments aboutactual author: the first one, the author is the student of Confucius named Gongsun Nizi:the others advised that Liu De and Mao Shengshuo are the authors. In this paper, thebook was not finished by one person but by several ones, even very likely it is acollection done by offspring.Chapter two focuses on the path of realizing the function of moral education by“Yue Ji”. This part is divided into four sections, the first section mainly write the origin of music; the second section is mainly talk about the "heart" which based on theTheory of Disposition to show the realistic significant in the value of music inpersonality and growing. The third section puts emphasis on"De Yin/moral music", incultivating moral, good music can let people have a beautiful heart, being kind, sincere,noble; The fourth section mainly writes"harmony". Music and universe are connectedessentially. And we can achieve the integration of nature and human.The third chapter pays attention to the relationship between music and rituals in“Yue Ji”. It will be described in three aspects: different functions of them;commonality of the two; finally, music and rituals are both necessary and can be in oneto promote human’s moral.Chapter four is mainly on the relationship between music and harmonious societyin “Yue Ji. Four aspects are included. The first section analyzes the basic traits ofancient music; the second section studies the basic components of ancient music; thethird section is about the governance function of music; the last section manifests themusic education in Confucian benevolent governance thoughts.The last part mainly analyzes how contemporary society to draw the valuableview of music education from “yue ji” in order to practice the rule of virtue and tobuild a harmonious society. Details will be expanded in three sections. The first sectionstudies different attitudes towards music education between East and West; Thesecond section analyzes the missing parts of music education in contemporary society;The third section discusses values and functions of music education in the constructionof a harmonious society.
