In the late1970s, the national implementation of the family planning policy has affected majority of the Chinese family, till now the one-child family has become the mainstream of Chinese family. With the increasing scale of "the lost only family","the lost only" has become the proper nouns in modern society of China. Therefore, the issue of parents having lost their only child has become a serious problem, which should be faced and considered by the public.Currently academic research mostly focused on the policy system, emphasizing the important role of the government and its main responsibility, ignoring the voice of the study subjects. The author chose a social organization of parents having lost their only child in shanghai as the primary research base, and supplementary investigation carried out in the author’s hometown. This paper focuses on self-help and self-empowerment of parents having lost their only child, so the author conducted in-depth interviews with14individuals, and in the perspective of subject construction, combined the use of narrative interpretation as the research strategy for the analysis of the interview materials. This paper uses a qualitative research method, the integrated use of literature research, in-depth interview and case study, combined with a simple quantitative research as a necessary supplement.Based on the categorization of the research group, the author draws the conclusion: parents who are out of bereavement experienced the periods of despair, lost and remodeling, they have abilities of self-help and self-empowerment, they can get into the remodeling phase to find "self" and "life meaning". Therefore, the author takes these three phases as the research framework, describes the cognition and behavior of parents having lost their only child, finding the key influence factors for leading the parents gradually out of bereavement and back into the life, so as to assist the parents better out of the predicament and into the future.
