Human culture has stepped into an unprecedented media age, and what is the real photography is queried when everybody has a camera. Throughout our study of art, it is quite a long time of the absence of photography. Literature, poetry, film, and painting are always regarded as elegant arts. However, the ideology that photography is shallow art trick still has the impact on the community in the psychological aspect. Photography in China entered the new era after the reform and opening up to the world, and the documentary photography became increasingly popular all over the country, and woke up in the nineties of the last century with a true sense. However, when the camera is no longer a rare thing, and everyone can use it for self-entertainment, photography returned to the pursuit of the traditional process of exploration rather than photo effects. Portrait photography was used more, which refused new schema and the temptation of the visual impact, and came into the incarnation of the spirit as the most traditional way.On the other hand, it is difficult to disguise a lack of creative means of simple group photo under the symbol of the people’s faces, when a large number of portraits were produced, and a rich sense interpretation cannot be provided by simple group photos. Those face with smile or not was only helpless presentation of expression. Instead of the evasive strategy, art has been forgotten as a manifestation of the truth. Portrait, the kind of repeating photography resulted in the dilemma of photography’s development, and creators’confusion has brought the viewer cognitive obstacles, and led to the crisis of the development of portrait photography at the same time. Therefore, it is an effective solution to solve the plight of the development of contemporary portrait photography from the aspect of visual anthropology. It is not to flaunt their status with anthropology, because we can find the traces of visual anthropology through the practice of portraiture, shooting techniques, works purposive interpretation of the text, value, and even images temperament. Currently, a number of photographers with anthropological vision have already owned the anthropological point of view into portrait photography, and their works have been noticed by visual anthropologists, and interpreted some human culture phenomena. With the dual characteristics of visual anthropology of science and art, we can make a better use of the value of portrait photography, and have a wider look at portrait photography in the academic space. Contemporary portrait photography is the main research object in this paper. With visual anthropology as the main analytical methods, I have selected the important text of portrait photography to analyze by following the main part of the study. In section1, I have concluded the definitions of visual anthropology and portrait photography and raise my own views. In section2, I have analyzed the anthropological origin of visual portrait photography.
