While there have been continued studies taken place over the morpheme "Seo," various researchers have presented their own perspectives, and no consistent explanation over "Seo" had been presented as of yet. The purpose of this paper is to describe the grammatical scope of "Seo" as an auxiliary particle by classifying "Seo" as an independent morpheme. To establish the scope of "Seo," the meanings and functions that "Seo" has are established first, while its diverse distribution characteristics different from case particles are also considered. In this paper, the diverse distribution scopes of the morpheme "Seo" combining with the substantives, case particles, and at the ends of predicates are confirmed. As for role functions,"Seo" commonly refers to a premise (condition) over a certain activity, and serves as the adverb limiting the contents of the predicates. Therefore, it is argued that "Seo" has the qualifications as an independent morpheme, and from grammatical scope, shall be viewed as an auxiliary particle.Chapter1is the introduction, and is divided into three parts. In Section1.1, the objectives of the study are discussed. Mainly, the needs for the study of this paper’s topic and its meanings are presented. In attempting to provide an overall discussion on "Seo," the meanings and functions of "Seo" coming after substantives and postpositions, and at the end of the predicates as well as its diverse distribution characteristics have been observed. Taking one step further, we plan to study "Seo" as an independent and separable morpheme and review its grammatical establishment. In Section1.2, the preceding studies have been reviewed. Existing researchers over "Seo" as a morpheme have been discussed. As the discussions had been focused on the adessive postposition "Eh," a further in-depth review over the cases where it is attached to other adessive postpositions takes place. We have critically analyzed the results of existing study outcomes and discussed their shortcomings as well as other issues to be addressed in this paper. In Section1.3, the study scope and method of the morpheme "Seo," which is the study topic of this research paper, have been considered. In Chapter2,"Seo" appearing after substantives are discussed. Here, we have categorized the uses into two groups:First, where "Seo" is added to person count words, and second, where "Seo" is added to case particles. The case particles are further grouped to "Seo" from "Ehseo","Seo" from "Kyeseo", and "Seo" from "Roseo." The shortening of "Seo" is also covered in this section. In Section2.1, we discuss that "Seo" combined on person count words would indicate that the group of people have formed one group to engage in an act together. Here,"Seo" would indicate the premise of the existence of forming a group before the parties performing the act actually engage in the act. As "Person count words+Seo" shows the methods of actions, it functions as an adverb limiting the predicates. In Section2.2, we take a look at "Seo" that is attached to case particles. In Section2.2.1, we note that the function of "Eh," which is an adessive particle, can be divided into a location and a direction."Seo" that is attached to "Eh" expressing a location relates to an action, and premises the condition of the location as a basis of the actions. Therefore, if "Seo" is attached to "Eh," it represents the location as the place where the actions are taking place. Meanwhile, if "Eh" attaches with a movement verb or direction, then it indicates the end destination. However, if "Seo" is attached to it, it indicates the beginning point of the act. For "Ehgeh" and "Kye" also, when "Seo" is attached, it would indicate the subject providing action to the subject and the subject causing the action, respectively. Therefore,"Seo" as found in sentences related to directions is used to indicate the source of the action. It is analyzed that this is due to the meaning of "presence" that is inherent in "Seo."In Section2.2.2, we note that when "Seo" is attached to "Ro," it would only be the case that "Ro" indicates the qualification or position. This premises that the condition of qualification or position providing the background of the described contents, and limits the term being described. In Chapter3, we discuss "Seo" that appears at the end of predicates. In Section3.1, we take a look at "-Eoseo" type of phrases, where the preceding event and the following event are combined as the cause and the effect. Here,"-Seo" uses the condition of the preceding event to be prior to the following event as a cause or in terms of timeline. As such, the preceding event is always prior to the following event, and limits the following event. Sometimes,"-Eo" and "Eoseo" may appear to be identical. This is because the meanings of "-Eo," which means completion, and "-Seo," which assumes the condition of preceding event, have overlapped. In Section3.2, we review how "-Go" has two functions in that there is the simple listing of two or more events as well as the causation listing linked by the before-and-after relationship of events."Go" with "Seo" combined either premises the condition of the preceding clause prior to the following clause, or limits the following clause by indicating that the preceding clause took place earlier in time. Therefore, in adjective clauses without time characteristics or in phrases with the following clauses having taken place before the preceding clauses in a timeline,"-Seo" cannot be utilized. In Section3.3., we analyze "Myeonseo" as "Myeo+n+seo.""N" is a time suffix indicating current progress, while "myeo" can mean either simple listing as well as simultaneousness. With "Seo" added, the preceding and the following clauses are joined to be concurrent."-Myeonseo" indicates a stronger characteristic of being simultaneous than "-Myeo."Chapter4is the conclusion part of this paper. The contents discussed above are briefly summarized and presented as the conclusion. Furthermore, the weaknesses of this paper and subsequent study topics are also mentioned.
