"Wen Said, Five Wing" Research

Shuowen Wuyi, or Five Wings of Shuowen Jiezi, was written by Wang Xu, a famous scholar in Qianjia period of Qing dynasty. It is made up of five parts, namely, pronunciation,2volumes, Meaning,2volumes, Deleting of repetition,1volume, Complement,1volume, Index,2volumes.Wang Xu was born in Qianjia period, and devoted himself to Zhouli, Yili, Chunqiu. He was diligent in in classics and proficient in philology. His Shuowen Wuyi had completed styles and abundant quotations. It was accomplished earlier than the works of the four great scholars on Shuowen Jiezi, like Shuowen Jiezi Yuezhu, Shuowen Jiezi Zhu, Shuowen Tongxun Dingsheng. However, it is buried by the latter, and is not considerd accordingly. There is no paper specialized on this work so far. In consideration of these circumstances, this paper is planed to conduct a comprehensive and deep research, aiming to make an objective and fair evaluation and provide a solid material for the academic history in Qing dynasty, especially the philology periodic.This paper analyzed the hole work and all of the entries, and than evaluate the achievements and shortcomings of the work and position its value and status in Qing Dynasty. According to the paper the research concludes the parts as follows:the author, versions, criticism and textual research on Xuxuan’s Shuowen Jiezi, philology philosophy reflected on it, achievements and problems of the book.The book is divided into four chapters, the first chapter is introduction. Section1introduces Wang’s life and academic. Section2describes the accomplishment, versions and spread of the work. Section3introduces the importance and methods of this reasearch.The second chapter is the contents of this work. Section1is about the overall purpose of the work, which was to revise Shuowen Jiezi. Section2is about voice including five parts. Section3is on meaning of words. Wang exalted Xushen, and criticized Xuxuan and Xukai, who distorted Xu’s work. As for the erroneous transformation of Chinese Characters’forms, Wangxu explained them with the theory of Liushu, and date from it. He also explored the relations between different forms of a character, and tried to find out the historical context of it changing.Section4is gleanings. Wang put the115missed characters into gleaning according to Shuowen Jiezi’s style, and reference of Zilin, Yupian, Guangyun. It was mainly according to the preface and notes of Xushen. Section5is deleting the repetition. Section6is index. The purpose is to regulate the charactors. There are3styles in all.Chapter3is methods and terms of Wang’s reseach. Section1is Changyan and Duanyan. Which was to tell the differences between nonrusheng and rusheng. Section2is change of pronunciations. Pronunciation refers to initial consonant. Section3is general changes which refered to the change of vowel. Wang was proficient in ancient pronouciation and put a high value on evidence, so that he could make good use of voice, which helped him to solve the problem of homophone replacement, exclusion of interchangeability separation phenomenon of form and meaning.Chapter4is conclusion. Section1is the accomplishment of Shuowen Wuyi. Section2is the shortcomings of his work. Section3is its influence.
