Turkish writer Pamuk grows up in Istanbul, a city where eastern culture collides with western culture. His works think of the identity in the process of cultural fusion profoundly. Under the impact of the western culture, the whole Turkey from group to individual sinks into deep sadness. Setting his master work "Istanbul" as example, my paper respectively analyses the appearances, reasons and results of the sadness in Pamuk’s works., mainly from three aspects:the color psychology, history and aesthetic culture. Drawing lessons from the function of "literary treatment" in the literature anthropology, this paper reveals that Pamuk treats himself and others through writing and presents the significance of literature on the process of regain self-recognition. This thesis consists of five parts:Chapter one is the introduction referring to the writer, his works and present research status. Pamuk accepts both eastern and western thoughts. He also has the eyesight beyond the boundaries between the east and the west. His works think about the problems of conflict between modernization and tradition. Presently academic study towards Pamuk’s works mainly focuses on the cultural blending, post-colonial and identity theory perspective. This paper analyses sadness in his works via color analysis, aesthetic culture and history.Chapter two describes the appearance of sadness, which is described as "hunzun" and "nostalgia". Personal grief makes up the national hunzun. The contemporary nostalgia derives from its wonderful history.Chapter three focuses on color analysis. Interpreting the aesthetic meaning of black, white and gray, this part shows that the monotonous color of Istanbul is given by its own sorrow.Chapter four analyses the reason of sad feeling. The reasons are various:historical change, culture confliction, the misunderstanding from the western and the conflict caused by the identity dilemma resulting in the endless sorrow.Chapter five is conclusion. Attempting to treat sadness through literature, Pamuk treats himself and others through literature. Literature can be helpful to recognize the reality and plight. Then drive away the plight and regain self-identification. Finally, make he sound as who he really is.
