It is generally accepted that the Shanghai School is the most influential painting genrein Chinese modern history. Under the background of late Qing dynasty with politicalturmoil and the invasion of the imperialist powers, Shanghai had unprecedenteddevelopment on economy and culture due to its particular geographic location andpolitical environment. The financial prosperity has attracted lots of painters going toShanghai for the communication on painting and promoted the development andinnovation of Chinese traditional painting. Such circumstance gradually formed a kind ofpainting style with regional cultural features, thereby generating so-called “The ShanghaiSchool” painting genre. Bonian Ren is the best representative in this genre. He haswell-practiced and all-round painting skills on figure, bird-and-flower, and landscapepainting. Bonian Ren and his creation of bird-and-flower painting have a fresh take onChinese traditional painting and play connecting role which not only inherited from thebase of painting of man-of-letters and absorb the essence of folk art, but also blend in theobservation method of Western painting. Therefore, Bonian Ren created a great number ofartworks with strong personal characteristic and reached the height of the times. Hispractices on painting have some reference to learn and research for us until now.For the research of Bonian Ren’s bird-and-flower painting, for years the academiccircles have focused on the analysis of his overall painting style and his contribution andspecial influence for the innovation and exploration on the composition ofbird-and-flower painting. Even though some experts did some researches, they were notthorough and systemic. On the basis of learning, and assimilating the former researchachievement, the article systematically discusses Bonian Ren’s artworks through analysis,comparison, and conclusion, and is to promote and rich future research on Bonian Ren’sbird-and-flower painting.The article mainly falls into four sections. The first section analyzed the artistic originand painting style of Bonian Ren’s bird-and-flower painting with existing historicalrecords and former research achievement. The second section revealed Bonian Ren’sartistic characteristics and expression method through appreciating and analyzing hispainting. The third section discussed Bonian Ren’s composition characteristics ofbird-and-flower painting and relationship among modeling, color and artistic conception.On the premise of previous three sections, the conclusion summarized Bonian Ren’sachievement by his exploration and innovation on the composition of bird-and-flowerpainting. Bonian Ren has broadly absorbed different painting style and formedindividualized “cubic mass” rule, compound rule and other modes of composition. Then,he also adopted “hiding method” to arrange the placement of avian, thereby enriching theexpressive force of avian in the painting. Bonian Ren and his exploration and creativity on the composition style of bird-and–flower painting will have the realistic guidingsignificance for today’s research and creation on bird-and-flower painting.
